In 1814, with Napoleon forced onto the defensive in France, all of Europe was gripped by political and diplomatic activity aimed at restoring order as intended by the Great Powers. In this political context, the fate of the first independent Italian state was definitively sealed: the Kingdom of Italy, led by Eugène de Beauharnais. In early February 1814, Eugène's Italian forces and Bellegarde's Austrians faced each other on the Mincio River in the most unlikely battle in history, where two armies decided to attack simultaneously, each unaware of the other's intentions. Meanwhile, Austria had pushed King Murat to strike his former ally Eugène from behind. The Kingdom of Italy lost any future, military or even political, due to the Neapolitan threat on the Po. Today, in Valeggio sul Mincio, a memorial stone commemorates that this was not a decisive battle, but rather the last battle of the Kingdom of Italy.
