In March 1815, with just two months to go until the end of his reign, Murat told a British envoy that Napoleon had forced him to establish a navy, which he actually felt no need for. Created in 1806 by Joseph Bonaparte based on a French naval mission, some veterans of the 1799 Republican navy, and the few vessels remaining in Naples after King Ferdinand's second flight, King Joachim's navy drove the English from Capri in October 1808, defended the Gulf of Naples from the Anglo-Sicilian expedition to Ischia and Procida in 1809, and was mobilized in the summer of 1810 for the planned landing in Sicily. The two most famous episodes were the duels of June 27, 1809, and May 1810, between the frigate Cerere, commanded by Giovanni Bausan and supported by the corvette Fama, and the British frigates Cyane and Spartan. But the most important role was played by the 140 coastal batteries and the 60-strong gun fleet, which during the confrontation in the Straits of Messina fought intensely against the Anglo-Sicilian fleet. At the same time, the shipyards in Naples and Castellammare produced two 74-gun vessels, a frigate, and a corvette, but the offshore division could not be ready until 1813, by which time Murat had already agreed with Lord Bentinck on the gradual resumption of trade and begun his defection from Napoleon's camp. In 1815, a modest naval force followed the brief Tolentino campaign in the Adriatic, but after the land defeat, the squadron was handed over to the British and then incorporated into the Sicilian navy. In addition to the operations, the authors reconstruct in detail the complex organization, which in 1813 numbered 6,000 men, plus 1,800 convicts and 1,500 coastal artillerymen, with a budget of 9 million francs. The volume is richly illustrated with scientific uniform tables by Massimo Fiorentino and the more imaginative yet artistic ones by Quinto Cenni, and is enriched by a contribution by Luigi Ombrato on the construction and use of Neapolitan gunboats.
