Originating in 1799 from the Waldensian Legion and other corps of revolutionary Piedmont, the 31st Light Infantry Regiment is one of the fourteen 'Italian' regiments of the French army of the First Empire. Until now neglected by historiography, it was recruited mainly in southern Piedmont and Liguria. Transferred in 1803 to the Channel coast, the 31st took part in the Austerlitz campaign with the elite battalion. In 1807 it was at Friedland and in 1808 it was assigned to the Armée du Portugal. Considered an elite regiment, among its major achievements were the killing of the English general Moore at La Coruña (1809), the crossing of the Devil's Bridge remembered in a novel by Bernard Cowell (Sharpe's Havoc), the battle of Bussaco (1810), the heroic rearguard fight among the oaks of Salamanca (1812); Finally, the last defense of the Pyrenees and southern France, from Orthez to Toulouse. Based on careful archival research conducted by Bruno Pauvert and the memoirs of two officers (Fantin des Odoards and Lemonnier Lafosse), the volume meticulously reconstructs these events and analyzes the ethnic and social composition of the 31st, which included 9,000 Italians and 4,000 French. It is accompanied by 350 officer biographies. The most famous was Captain Eusebio Bava, one of the future generals of the Risorgimento.
